The Context Window Problem: How to Feed AI Your Entire Codebase

Your codebase is 50,000 lines across 200 files. The AI tool you’re using has a 200K token context window. Even with the biggest window available, you can’t dump everything in and say “fix the bug on line 342 of the payments module.” The AI needs the right context, not all the context.

Strategy 1: Project Instruction Files

Every AI coding tool supports project-level instructions. For Claude Code, it’s CLAUDE.md. For Cursor, it’s .cursorrules. For GitHub Copilot, it’s .github/copilot-instructions.md.

These files load into context at the start of every session. Frontload what the AI needs most:

- lib/wordpress.ts — All WP API calls

- All API calls go through lib/wordpress.ts
- Tests in co-located __tests__/ directories

This gives the AI a mental map before it reads a single file. It knows where to look, what patterns to follow, and what conventions to respect.

Strategy 2: Memory Files for Persistent Knowledge

Instruction files cover the static stuff. Memory files capture decisions and knowledge that accumulate over time:

- The WP REST API returns dates in GMT, frontend expects local time

## Patterns Established
- Error boundaries wrap every route segment
- Loading states use skeleton components from components/ui/skeleton.tsx

This prevents the AI from re-discovering things you’ve already figured out or suggesting approaches you’ve already rejected.

Strategy 3: Selective File Loading

You don’t need the AI to see everything. You need it to see the right files. This hierarchy works well:

  • Always loaded: Project instructions, memory files, package.json
  • Task-specific: The file you’re editing + its imports + its tests
  • Reference: Similar files that demonstrate the pattern you want followed

Reference files are the secret weapon. Want the AI to build a new API endpoint? Show it an existing endpoint that follows your conventions. It’ll match the pattern better than any written instruction.

Strategy 4: MCP Servers for Live Documentation

Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers let AI tools pull in external documentation on demand. Instead of pasting Next.js docs into your conversation, the AI queries a docs server for specific API references.

This offloads reference documentation from your context window entirely. The AI fetches only what it needs, when it needs it.

Strategy 5: Structure Your Code for AI

Some codebases are inherently easier for AI to work with:

  • Co-locate related code. API route, types, and tests in the same directory means fewer files needed for context.
  • Descriptive file names. lib/wordpress/fetch-posts.ts tells the AI what’s inside. lib/utils.ts tells it nothing.
  • Keep functions focused. A 50-line function fits in context better than a 500-line one, and the AI modifies it more accurately.
  • Type everything. TypeScript types are dense context. A well-typed interface communicates more than ten lines of documentation.

What Doesn’t Work

Concatenating your entire codebase into one file. The AI drowns in irrelevant context and produces worse results than giving it three carefully chosen files.

Relying solely on the AI’s search capabilities. AI tools can search your codebase, but they don’t always search the right things. Guide them with instruction files.

The context window isn’t a bucket to fill — it’s a spotlight. Point it at the right code, give it the right background knowledge, and the AI performs dramatically better than when you give it everything and hope for the best.
